Wow this blog is like so dead la. Come on share some random crazy lame videos or cool designs that u see on the web!

anyway, thought you guys might be interested:

There's this Noise Singapore thing where you could upload your works and if the judges think it's good, you've then got a chance to exhibit your works in this showcase that they will be having in town area, last year's one was at far east. I thought it was quite a good platform for your works to be recognised and you could get some exposure too so it's worth a try. There are 3 categories i think, one for photography, one for illustrations and one for music.

Since it's free, I think you can just zham as many works as possible. Include those that you did last yr!

Dear Hive Designers.

This announcements serves to align information on the submission of the coffee table book, assignment 4 for BDS.

The submission outline has been briefed to you on your last lecture of BDS, and I trust you should have them if you have been at the lecture.
For the benefit of those who were not there and did not notify me sooner of any doubts with regards to the submission, I seek that you extract the information from the deck I shared with those who were there at the lecture.

Please extract the deck at Learning Resources > Coffee Table Book Lecture Deck and Submission Requirements > pdf file.

I seek that you are more proactive in the future for clarifications on submissions.

I would also like to note that more than half of you (in 01 and 02) HAVE NOT consulted me on your concept and your design for your CTB, despite sharing with you how important these 2 components are at your last submissions.
Some of you came to me for concept consultation, but DID NOT follow through to the design stage with me.

I feel that you have NOT used the project extension period well in seeking consultation from your lecturers.

I will see the outcome on Friday.

Hello! :) this is an article that i would like to share, to help those that are having problems brainstorming.

Here is a list of 25 brainstorming techniques you can use to get out of the situation you are in! From this list, you can assess what’s the best method for the issue you are facing and apply it accordingly.

• Time Travel. How would you deal with this if you were in a different time period? 10 years ago? 100 years ago? 1,000 years ago? 10,000 years ago? How about in the future? 10 years later? 100 years later? 1,000 years later? 10,000 years later?

• Teleportation: What if you were facing this problem in a different place? Different country? Different geographic region? Different universe? Different plane of existence? How would you handle it?

• Attribute change. How would you think about this if you were a different gender? Age? Race? Intellect? Height? Weight? Nationality? Your Sanity? With each attribute change, you become exposed to a new spectrum of thinking you were subconsciously closed off from.

• Rolestorming. What would you do if you were someone else? Your parent? Your teacher? Your manager? Your partner? Your best friend? Your enemy? Etc?

• Iconic Figures. This is a spinoff of rolestorming. What if you were an iconic figure of the past? Buddha? Jesus? Krishna? Albert Einstein? Thomas Edison? Mother Theresa? Princess Diana? Winston Churchill? Adolf Hitler? How about the present? Barack Obama? Steve Jobs? Bill Gates? Warren Buffet? Steven Spielberg? Etc? How would you think about your situation?

• Superpowers. This is another spinoff of rolestorming. What if you suddenly have superpowers? Superman? Spiderman? Wonderwoman? X-Men? The Hulk? One of the Fantastic Four? What would you do?

• Gap Filling. Identify your current spot – Point A – and your end goal – Point B. What is the gap that exists between A and B? What are all the things you need to fill up this gap? List them down and find out what it takes to get them.

• Group Ideation. Have a group brainstorming session! Get a group of people and start ideating together. More brains are better than one! Let the creative juices flow together!

• Mind Map Great tool to work out as many ideas as you can in hierarchical tree and cluster format. Start off with your goal in the center, branch out into the major sub-topics, continue to branch out into as many sub-sub-topics as needed.

• Medici Effect refers to how ideas in seemingly unrelated topics/fields intersect. Put your goal alongside similar goals in different areas/contexts and identify parallel themes/solutions. For example, if your goal is to be an award winning artist, look at award winning musicians, educators, game developers, computer makers, businessmen, etc. Are there any commonalities that lie among all of them that you can apply to your situation? What worked for each of them that you can adopt?

• SWOT Analysis. Do a SWOT of your situation – What are the Strengths? Weaknesses? Opportunities? Threats? The analysis will open you up to ideas you may not be aware before.

• Brain Writing. Get a group of people and have them write their ideas on their own sheet of paper. After 10 minutes, rotate the sheets to different people and build off what the others wrote on their paper. Continue until everyone has written on everyone else’s sheet.

• Trigger Method. Brainstorm on as many ideas as possible. Then select the best ones and brainstorm on those ideas as ‘triggers’ for more ideas. Repeat until you find the best solution.

• Variable Brainstorming. First, identify the variable in the end outcome you look to achieve. For example, if your goal is to achieve X visitors to your website, the variable is # of visitors. Second, list down all the possibilities for that variable. Different variations of visitors are gender/age/race/nationality/occupation/interests/etc. Think about the question with each different variable. For example, for Genre: How can you get more females to your website? How can you get more males to your website? For age: How can you get more teenagers to your website? How can you get more adults to your website? And so on.

• Niche. This is the next level of variable brainstorming method. From the variations of the variable you have listed, mix and match them in different ways and brainstorm against those niches. For example, using the example in #14, how can you get more male teenagers to your website? (Gender & Age) How can you get more American female adults to your website? (Nationality, Gender & Age)

• Challenger.List down all the assumptions in your situation and challenge them. For example, your goal is to brainstorm on a list of ideas for your romance novel which you want to get published. There are several assumptions you are operating in here. #1: Genre to write: Romance. Why must it be that romance? Can it be a different genre? Another assumption is for a novel. #2: Length of the story: Novel. Why must it be a novel? Can it be a short story? A series of books? #3: Medium: Book. Why must be it a book? Can it be an ebook? Mp3? Video? And so on.

Escape Thinking. This is a variation of Challenger method. Look at the assumptions behind the goal you are trying to achieve, then flip that assumption around and look at your goal from that new angle. For example, you want to earn more income from selling books. Your assumption may be ‘People buy books for themselves’. Flip the assumption around such that ‘People do NOT buy books for reading’. What will this lead to? You may end up with people buy books as gifts, for collection purposes, etc. Another assumption may be ‘People read books’. The flip side of this assumption may be people look at books (drawings). Escaping from these assumptions will bring you to a different realm of thought on how to achieve your goal.

• Exaggeration. Exaggerate your goal and see how you will deal with it now. Enlarge it: What if it is 10 times its current size? 100 times? 1000 times? Shrink it: What if it is 1/10 its current size? 1/100? 1/1000? Multiply it: What if you have 10 of these goals now? 100? 1000?

• Get Random Input. Get a random stimuli and try to see how you can fit it into your situation. Get a random word/image from a dictionary/webpage/book/magazine/newspaper/TV/etc, a random object from your room/house/workplace/neighborhood/etc and so on.

• Meditation. Focus on your key question such as ‘How can I solve XX problem?’ or ‘How can I achieve XX goal?’ and meditate on it in a quiet place. Have a pen and paper in front of you so you can write immediately whatever comes to mind. Do this for 30 minutes or as long as it takes.

• Write a list of 101 ideas. Open your word processor and write a laundry list of at least 101 ideas to deal with your situation. Go wild and write whatever you can think of without restricting yourself. Do not stop until you have at least 101.

Submission requirements are as per standards of all BDS submissions:

Mock-up of Proposed Artwork (1 unit)
Mounted Artwork, both sides (1 side each) on a minimum A3 Mounting Board, Labelled
Development Report, A4, Bound (No loose pieces will be accepted)
CD-Rom containing all Working Files and Report Contents, Labelled

Please find notes on Brochure Design as supplements for your research and development in place of the Monday lecture we miss due to the National Day Public Holiday in the BB's Learning Resources Tab; Supplementary Notes + Creative Briefs.
Also find a sample Creative Brief I drafted based on what I learnt of the client's requirements.
Please note that it may NOT be comprehensive.
You should make the necessary amendments, as per briefed by the client during their presentation at lecture last Monday, and work your creatives according to what you picked up at the client briefing.
You will need to train to pick requirements from the clients themselves, and not have briefs spoon-fed to you.

On Monday, please come at 9.00 am for BDS lecture instead of 8.00 am.
Mr Nicholas Paul from Young NTUC will be there to make an introduction of Young NTUC to you, and to communicate his brief to you.
Please sit in the brief as this will give you the opportunity to set your brief right, and to clear any doubts you may have on this brief.

As a guide, I have attached an empty Creative Brief in this email.
The Creative Brief contains questions that we agencies typically ask our clients before setting out to design our creatives.
You may refer to them to ask Mr Nicholas questions.
You may also prepare questions of your own to ask him too.
Once the briefing session is over, you should start on your creative process to crack this brief.

He is also there to judge a photography competition.
He will share with students his experience in making TV commercials using photography techniques and some commercials including M1 and HP.

- Write-up on product benefits (1 page)
- Write-up on product positioning ( half page)
- Write-up on market segment (half page)

Hence, get as much done as possible, as we should have already completed all these by last week.

Hello people! Here are the weekly updates again:

1. Monday marks the end of torture by BB. So get everything ready, latest submission by 1.30pm.
Things to prepare:
- All the boards that you have prepared previously for the interium presentation
- Mock ups of collaterals, neatly packed into an envelope
- Report, which consist of brand DNA, logo rationale, sketches of development, and your learning journey for DT (500 words)
- 2 CDs, labelled. 1 for CI manual, which should include your logo and other colour variations. 1 for report, which should include all working files (logo, collaterals, paraphernalia), soft copy of report content. All to be organised into folders please.

2. MLP report is due this week

3. Read DT2 assignment 1b brief, and bring something to show to Lau Lau on thursday. He wants to see some progress.

4. CROWBAR DEADLINE IS ON THURSDAY!!

1. Interium presentation is on Monday at 8.15am. Please be in school by 8am, and get the following ready:
- One full colour logo, A4, mounted with 3cm border (include logo in smallest size at the corner)
- One signature logo, A4, mounted
- One more signature logo, loose sheet, for the client to bring back
- Colour codes in CMYK for logo in full colour, greyscale and black & white; A4, mounted
- Full presentation of logo applications on collaterals & paraphernalia, A3, mounted (you can have more that 1 sheet)

Remember to include your label at the back of the board, bottom right corner.

2. MLP report deadline's postponed to week 7, which means 2 more weeks!

3. 3DMV assignment deadline's postponed too, to week 11, after the holidays.

I just wanna add on, it's alright if your present doesn't cost much. Even a simple note on a paper could show more sincerity than a really expensive gift. Imagine getting a hand written note from every classmate, wouldn't that be nice? Heh.. So i hope you guys would try this system for a few more months? If it really doesn't work out, we'll gladly change (:

Anyhow, this is this week's update on your homework:

1. By Monday's BDS lesson:
- BB's logo should be all confirmed and finalised, including all the colour schemes
- Moodboard should be printed on A4
- Plan out what you want for BB's paraphernalia

2. DTS's assignment 1 deadline is DUE this FRIDAY, 15TH!

3. Start searching for an object to work on for 3DMV.

4. Start working on the preliminary report for MLP.

And plese be reminded that the Ezlink card mass replacement thingy is conducted from 11 May to 15 May 2009 at the Convention Hall (basement level) from 8.30am to 5.30pm. Hi!

I'm here to update on the current status of class fund as of May 08.

$2 was collected from every one in the class, so we had a total sum of $36 for May babies presents.

$36 - $4.80 (2 Singpost parcels) - $30 (Prima Deli's cake) = $1.20 (Remaining class fund)

The extra money we had for every 2 birthday babies month can use to offset for the parcels for the month of 3 birthday babies. So it'll only be $2 for every month for birthday.

I realized despite the cake was 1kg, it wasn't able to feed all of the 18 of us. So maybe we should switch to other cake shop alternatives. Anybody knows of where we can get cakes below $30, and it's delicious and big? It's even better when we can bargain to lower the price with the person like if we can sign an agreement of buying a cake every month from them. Hahaha! Just a suggestion though.

As for the money issue on the presents, I understand it may be quite costly compared to the last year's system where everyone just chipped in a dollar for every one person's birthday. Cerlyn has suggested the idea so it works on the theme of birthday mail. I believe it's more sincere and personal too.

Let's think of this way, instead of the Angel and Mortal game we had last year, the money spent buying gifts for your mortal was brought over to the birthday babies instead. Although it might cost a little more this time. But isn't giving gifts more on about making someone's day, rather than concerning on the values? I understand some of us here may not afford to take on this idea. It's not compulsory for everyone to give a present to the birthday person. It's definitely not about being awkward, or embarrassed if you don't. Chipping in the dollar for the birthday cake, it's also part of gifting.

Even the person who's not very close to you, by sending him/her a small gift shows your sincerity in sending your wishes but at the same time it can be an opportunity of sending your gratitude to that person to how he/she had helped you before. (For eg. the person might had inspired you by suggesting ideas to you, helped you print your assignments, bought your mounting boards, cut your boards, commented on your designs and really many more) These are a few little things that our classmates have done for us without asking for returns. Haha, sorry if I'm going too emotional on this. But I think we should be appreciative of what we have around us and not taking them for granted.

So my point is maybe instead of just chipping the money and let the birthday coordinator do the job of buying the gifts for the birthday people, isn't it better where we get to choose individual gifts for them? And here you can include personal notes in as well.

It doesn't have to be all huge and pricey. It's really the sincerity that counts!

Maybe we can just try this for a few months more? If it's really getting on too much on our expense, we can go back to the old system! :)

Well, I don't know how to begin.
But....

I'll not be going to school anymore from tomorrow onwards. Today is my last day as your classmate, also as a Singapore Poly student. I will be pursuing another field of education overseas....

Hwans here :D Okay, I know I don't normally do this :/ But Ash & Char hasn't been to class lately due to the Borello workshop thing. So I guess I'll try updating about what's going on the past week (: Correct me if there's any mistakes or have I left out anything (:

IDS: Assignment 3 deadline is 2nd jan 2009

CD: Reminder that there is presentation on the upcoming thursday, those who are not presenting must turn up because u will also be graded for self-reflections**

DT: Storyboard assignment part one is extended till the upcoming monday, view details in blackboard on extactly what to submit. Part 2 is due on 6 dec. Also, get your ordered notes from Ash/Char on Monday on "how to draw manga figures". They will help u to composite your comics for part two of assignment.

VDS: Photography assignment deadline is 31st and 14 jan 08/09, Typography is due 8th Jan 09, The upcoming lesson on wed is replaced by a photoshoot thingy, we are supposed to meet at the foyer at t11A if im not wrong; details to be updated soon. There is also a exhibition outing at douby ghaut on the upcoming thursday. Do not be late. Details also to be updated again.

DS: People going for the workshop MUST submit the form on Monday please. You are excused from lessons from tuesday to friday. Rest of the class will be doing watercolour lessons. Remember to pay $2.50 to Ash if u havent paid. Owe Money Pay Money!

Misc: Those who submitted the photograph for "A tale of two cities" please send Char an email with the following details in the sms sent out to you all. by Sunday.

PLAN YOUR IDEAS VISUALLY IN SKETCHES FIRST!
If your group is quite big, you may split into smaller groups to work on separate themes.

Updates for last week:

DT1:
get ready 3 life story ideas for tomorrow's(10/11) lesson. Also, download the story proposal and storyboard template from blackboard if you haven't.

IDS:
Assignment 3 brief is up on blackboard.

HCD:
We're supposed to find 5 examples of graphic design works that incorporate our group's specific design history genre into their works. (Eg. Victorian, Post-modernism.. etc). As long as the works are kind of a "revival" from the design movement, they're counted. (Show pictures of the works and name of the designers)

DS:
Colour visual, and visuals for art piece are to be shown to Ms Huei by the coming tuesday. Bring whatever reference materials, colour materials etc. that you need so that you can do colour visuals during lesson as well.

CD:
Please print out the CD form, fill in the details, and pass them either to Charmaine or Ashlyn to collate and give to Ms Huei. Presentation for CD case study starts on Week 6!

VDS:
Get your 108 photographs on standby, choose 10 best shots to hand in to Shirlynn on the upcoming thursday (13/11). Remember to research on your favourite photographers .. (even though she hasn't mentioned it for a while...)

Hello all!

I'm here to update about the upcoming photography trip on 9th November, Sunday.
Please make it if you can because we will be taking a lot of photographs for our VDS assignment 4 : D

Singapore Teddy Bear Show 2008 @ The Arts House

We will be meeting at Raffles Place MRT station at 1pm sharp. 15 minutes grace only for the latecomers. So don't be late!!

I'm not sure if photography is allowed for the exhibition but after the visit, we are going around the town area and shoot! We will probably be shooting until 8 or 9pm (if you are up for night sceneries, do bring your tripod along :)

Oh yea. sorry if you had been trying hard to call me but i just didn't pick up. please understand that my phone has got this virus thing and everything will set back to default, e.g the wallpaper and the ringtone. the default ringtone is extremely disgusting thus my phone is always on silent mode. and my phone is like detached from me most of the time and it is deeply hidden inside my big bag so i cant hear the vibration. D: SO SORRY. i will promise to do something abt it and someone please teach me how to reset the handphone!
